Technology and Music – Baroque, Boole, Binary, Beams, and Bach Is this merely a clever alliteration or a deep connection between science, mathematics, and western culture entirely overlooked? The following seeks to join these five B's in an intimate manner, bringing to light this seemingly complex connection. Part I: Baroque and Bach Chromaticism and elaborate forms of ornamentation characterize the Baroque period of music. In fact, this period, lasting from the late sixteenth century through the early eighteenth century, marked the first period in which composers truly used harmony in music. In addition, this period brought to fame many composers whose music is still enjoyed today including Pachelbel, Handel, Haydn, Vivaldi, and Bach. Born in 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach (hereafter Bach) made himself one of the most renowned western composers of all time. Johann Ambrosia Bach, Bach's father, and Johann Christoph Bach, Bach's brother, trained Bach in music at a very young age. In 1703 at the age of 18, Bach began a series of jobs as organist in Arstadt. Twenty years later, Bach became cantor and choral director at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. He held this distinguished position until his death. Before his death in 1750, though, Bach had had two wives (the first died in 1720) and 20 children some of whom became musicians as well. He had written such notable pieces as the Brandenburg concertos, "The Art of the Fugue," various religious compositions including the "Mass in B minor" and the "St. John Passion," numerous fugues, preludes and overtures, and more than 300 cantatas. Bach's "Overture Number 3: Air" is a composition often played at weddings, graduations and the like. Though it is only about four and one half minutes in length, it is one of my personal favorites, and will be noted later as this odd connection continues. Part II: Boole and Binary George Boole, a self-taught mathematician and logician, was born in England in 1815 (approximately 65 years after Bach's death). In 1854, he published "An Investigation of the Laws of Thought, on Which Are Founded the Mathematical Theories of Logic and Probabilities." Therein can be found the basis for substituting symbols for the words in the language of logic, thus Boolean algebra is born. Today, computer scientists often use Boolean to relate sets of data. Using the words AND, OR, NOT, IF, and EXCEPT, a Boolean algebraist can determine the truth of a statement as well as rewrite the statement in a more understandable form. Factory Near Housing Area

An international company is planning to set up a factory near your housing area. The proposed factory however, is believed to be environmentally hazardous. It will pollute the environment through thermal pollution, chemical pollution, air pollution, and noise pollution. One of it is thermal pollution, another form of water pollution. Like other form of water pollution, thermal pollution is widespread, effecting many rivers, lakes and stream around the world. It happens when there is increase of temperature in the stream, river or lake. Factories involve in thermal pollution when they dump water used to cool their machinery. As we all know, water used for cooling the machine warms to five to ten Celsius degree before dumped back into river or lake where it come from.When water temperature rises from normal temperature, the plants and animals lived in the water will die because they had been adapted to live in a certain range of temperature only. Increase in temperature cause them to die. Therefore, we shouldn’t allow this to happen because it will affect the stability of the ecosystem which also leads to decreasing food source. As we know it, many hazardous chemicals are used in factories during the production process, after which they are dumped into rivers and lakes.Issues about factories that did not dispose their chemical wastes in the correct way are also very common in these days. Unused chemical substances were disposed into the rivers illegally. This had eventually endangered the water species in the river and destroyed the drinking water sources of the people. As a result, more than 40% of the rivers in China are considered unfit for drinking, while 64% of major cities and towns have  seriously polluted groundwater. We can’t let this happen in our housing area because water is a very important source for us to live.Therefore building a factory near the housing area is not supposed to happen. Besides, noise pollution is also one of the pollution that is contributed by factory. Machine in the factory produce very loud noises which can affect the health and behavior of a person. This is because unwanted noise can damage physiological and psychological health. For example, people will face many health problems such as annoyance and aggression,  hypertension, high stress levels,  tinnitus, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and other harmful effects due to the exposure of loud noise.Therefore, if the factory is just around the corner, the possibility for the community to be effected by the loud noise is very high. A Single Work of Art, With Many Faces By: Logan Dodge Few works of art are able to perfectly capture a period of time as thoroughly as Paul Reassurances does with his masterpiece titled, Retroactive. He was one of the first artist who wanted to take mass media into the art studio, and break down the barriers between art and things like advertising, newspapers, and television. Retroactive is a brilliant collage of iconic images from the early ass’s and it captured all of its political drama, scientific breakthrough, and the emotions that went along with that time period. In 1961, America led a failed invasion of the communist island of Cuba. This led to the Cuban missile crisis the following year and in 1963, a man sits in the back seat of a car with his wife. For all of Reassurance’s use of symbolism through pop culture, and the double meanings he uses, I consider Retroactive a work of art. It uses themes of collage through the gathering and connecting unrelated images into a cohesive work. His use of pop culture images and icons, familiar with the American public and the rest of the world as well, allows me to say that this is also a form of pop art.
